Application

This unit describes skills and knowledge required to plan and undertake the installation of specialist staging equipment for productions in the entertainment and events industries. It involves preparing required documentation, undertaking installation and uninstallation of required equipment and completing post-show administrative tasks.

The unit applies to those who work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring that specialist staging equipment is installed and tested in line with safety standards, prior to performances or events. They may be responsible for supervising others.

The National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work applies to persons performing dogging, rigging, scaffolding work and operating elevating work platforms. Completion of the following units is required for certification and where applicable, at either basic, intermediate or advanced levels:

  • CPCCLDG3001 Licence to perform dogging
  • CPCCLRG3001 Licence to perform rigging basic level
  • CPCCLRG3002 Licence to perform rigging intermediate level
  • CPCCLRG4001 Licence to perform rigging advanced level
  • CPCCLSF2001 Licence to erect, alter and dismantle scaffolding basic level
  • TLILIC0005 Licence to operate a boom-type elevating work platform (boom length 11 metres or more).

Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the definition of construction work. If so, people entering a construction site are required to complete the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (Commonwealth of Australia, 2007).

Achievement of the unit ‘CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry’ fulfils this requirement.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Prepare to install specialist staging equipment

1.1 Obtain production documentation and clarify requirements for specialist staging equipment in consultation with required personnel

1.2 Inspect fly tower and stage at venues and identify modifications that need to be made to existing grid or infrastructure

1.3 Organise modifications in line with own level of responsibility and refer matters that need attention to required personnel

1.4 Plan installation work in line with safety guidelines and licensing requirements

1.5 Anticipate problems that may arise during installation, rehearsal and operational phases and plan accordingly

1.6 Obtain approval for weight loads plan and safe work methods statement

2. Complete specialist staging installation

2.1 Load counter-weight cradles for flying scenery and other items in line with production requirements

2.2 Rig bridles, spreaders and other rigging equipment and create rigging points not covered by existing grids

2.3 Install and synchronise chain motors and winches as required

2.4 Install brailing lines as required

2.5 Install specialist staging elements according to production and safety requirements

2.6 Test equipment installed for functionality and adjust installation as required

3. Complete post-show operations

3.1 Uninstall specialist staging equipment according to production and safety requirements

3.2 Organise maintenance of equipment as required before storing or transporting

3.3 Provide input into post-show debriefing sessions and note aspects of staging operations that could be improved in future productions

3.4 Review own work performance and adjust work practices accordingly

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • prepare a weight loads plan for at least two different productions
  • install and uninstall different specialist staging equipment for at least two different productions.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • work collaboratively with others during equipment installation and uninstallation procedures
  • identify and follow safe work practices.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • hazards associated with installing staging equipment and procedures for minimising them
  • methods of lifting, handling and supporting staging equipment during installation
  • contents of safe work method statements
  • issues and challenges that typically arise in the context of installing specialist staging equipment, and solutions to address them
  • scientific principles of lifting, handling and moving loads in the context of installing specialist staging equipment
  • common production requirements that include efficiency standards
  • safety issues that impact on flying systems, including regulations about:
  • tasks that require a licensed rigger
  • work that can be undertaken by unlicensed personnel.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • venues with a fly tower
  • productions that require specialist staging equipment.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
